The Law
First and foremost we must remind you of our legal
obligations and limitations in New Zealand.
You are allowed to grow no more than 15kg tobacco for
personal use. These are the restrictions, you:
- may only grow for your own personal use
- may only grow up to 15kg per person who smokes and who
normally
lives at the
same address where you are growing
- may not sell, barter or gift any tobacco you grow to any
other person
- may only sell your tobacco if you are a registered supplier
and pay
appropriate duty taxes as required by law
Growing Tobacco
Tobacco plants are relatively easy to grow requiring little
preparation and maintenance. It is important however to select a
suitable location to grow, the following points will assist:
- Tobacco like to be in full sun but need protection from
strong winds
- Ensure you have enough room for your plantts with at least
1.5m spacing between them
- Select an area that drains well
- Turn the soil in spring after frosts
- Fertilize by digging in granular fertilizer
Note, we reside in Taranaki, the lower west of the north island where
temperatures can differ considerably to the likes of far north areas.
That in mind, our guide and growing season will differ from warmer
climates such as those in the far north.
